Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, the AL Secretary-General, issued a statement celebrating the G20 leaders’ decision to welcome the African Union into their ranks.

He voiced optimism that the Arab League might be accorded similar recognition in the future.

During the weekend, the decision to grant the AU a permanent spot in the G20 was finalized.

This took place at the opening session of a two-day G20 summit in New Delhi, India.

Aboul-Gheit described this as a constructive move, anticipating mutual benefits and an augmented role for African nations in shaping the world’s economic trajectory.

He emphasized the significance of this development in boosting Africa’s capacity to address pressing global challenges, including climate change, food security, energy sustainability, and more.

Lastly, Aboul-Gheit expressed his aspiration that the G20 would soon consider and approve the Arab League’s membership application.

NAN reports that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced on Sunday the inclusion of the AU as a permanent member of the G-20.

Modi, who banged his gavel three times before the announcement, shook hands with the current African Union chair, President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, and invited him to sit at the table.

He said: “I invite the representative of the African Union to take his place as a permanent member of the G-20.”

Modi told leaders that they must find “concrete solutions” to the widespread challenges that arose from the “ups and downs in the global economy; the North and South divide; and the chasm between the East and the West.” (Xinhua/NAN)
