Chelsea Midfielder Demand Huge Pay rise To Renew His Contract
According to a report from the Spanish publication Diario Sport, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has asked for a pay increase that is twice the amount of his current contract. The Italian international is reportedly making £5.5 million, but there are rumors that he wants to increase that to £12 million as his contract expires next summer.
Since arriving to Stamford Bridge from Napoli in 2018 under then-manager Maurizio Sarri, the 30-year-old has been a crucial member of the Blues. It took some time for Jorginho’s midfield metronome style to emerge, but once it did, he became an important member of the team in west London.
This resulted in the midfielder having an outstanding individual season in 2020–21, leading Chelsea to the Champions League title and Italy to the European Championships. He received a lot of praise for his contributions to the squad as well, coming in third place for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.
Since then, Graham Potter, the new manager, has the ability to completely reconstruct the midfield, which has put his authority at the club in jeopardy. Next summer will mark the contract’s expiration, which presents a challenge for Todd Boehly, a part-owner and acting sporting director.
That’s because it’s not just Jorginho who is out of contract, but also France international N’Golo Kante, who has been another key player over the years, but injuries are starting to mount up for him. The rebuild could be costly and may take time in an area that has needed it.
Jorginho’s contract demands come with that in mind, knowing the club will have to invest otherwise risk losing him, with plenty of other clubs – such as Juventus, Barcelona and AC Milan – all holding long-term interest in the 30-year-old.
