Gervonta Davis retains his WBA lightweight title after unanimous decision win over Isaac Cruz
Gervonta Davis defeated Isaac Cruz on Sunday night in Los Angeles to keep hold of his WBA lightweight championship.
‘Tank’ won a unanimous decision to remain an undefeated two-weight world champion as the division hots up.
The clash took place on Dec. 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Gervonta Davis (26-0) put his WBA lightweight belt on the line against Isaac Cruz (22-2-1), which aired live on Showtime pay-per-view.
The pair fought all through the 12 rounds before Davis was able to pull out a narrow unanimous decision win (116-112, 115-113, 115-113) to remain undefeated in 26 fights (26-0, 24 KOs).
After the fight, Davis said he hurt his hand around the sixth round, which he felt prevented him from knocking out Cruz and extending his KO streak to 16.
“I hurt my hand so I couldn’t get him out of there,” said Davis, a southpaw who barely threw a left hand over the final two rounds.
“He’s a shorter fighter so I was throwing down on the top of his head. I hit him with my knuckle and messed it up. I hurt my hand in the sixth round.”
“It was right around the fifth round I saw that his hand wasn’t working correctly,” Cruz said through an interpreter.
