Like Buhari, Tinubu Likely To Be Petroleum Minister And Also President

Published

Following in the footsteps of his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu seems to be preparing to assume leadership roles in both the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the newly established Ministry of Gas Resources.

This strategic move came to light as President Tinubu unveiled his ministerial assignments, a week after their Senate screening.

The portfolio allocations reveal a deliberate and calculated approach to governance, positioning key figures in roles that align with their expertise and experience. Notably, former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike was named Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while Wale Edun was appointed Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

Crucially, President Tinubu’s selection for the new administration included Ali Pate, a respected professor, who will serve as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. Meanwhile, Lateef Fagbemi will step into the pivotal role of Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Former Jigawa Governor Mohamed Badaru will take on the responsibilities of Minister of Defence, and Ex-Kebbi Governor Atiku Bagudu is set to serve as Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.

Interestingly, President Tinubu did not explicitly designate any ministerial nominees to lead the critical portfolios of gas resources and petroleum resources. While he hasn’t overtly declared his intention to assume the role of petroleum minister, this strategic omission strongly suggests his consideration for such a position. Notably, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu’s spokesperson, refrained from commenting on the matter despite attempts to reach out via calls and text messages.

The potential consolidation of leadership over both petroleum and gas resources carries significant implications for Nigeria’s energy sector and its overall economic landscape. It aligns with a vision that aims to streamline decision-making processes and optimize resource management.

President Tinubu’s approach appears to mirror his predecessor’s in some respects, demonstrating continuity in certain strategies and an emphasis on leveraging his experience and knowledge to drive impactful governance. As Nigeria faces a multitude of challenges and opportunities, this nuanced approach to ministerial assignments could prove instrumental in shaping the nation’s trajectory and achieving its developmental goals.

In the coming months, as President Tinubu’s administration takes shape and policies unfold, the roles of these key ministers, as well as the decision on leadership over the critical energy portfolios, will undoubtedly attract close scrutiny and analysis from both within and outside Nigeria. The landscape of governance is evolving, and the choices made now will influence the nation’s trajectory for years to come.
