Lionel Messi Draws Level With Arch-Rival Cristiano Ronaldo on Two International Titles After Winning Finalissima With Argentina

Published

Lionel Messi has equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of major international honours after helping Argentina secure the Finalissima trophy on Wednesday night, June 1.

The 34-year-old PSG star produced a masterclass performance that saw Argentina defeat Italy in a 3-0 win at Wembley as he provided two assists with Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala all scoring to ensure they cruise to Finalissima glory.

The Finalissima trophy delight comes 11 months after Messi led Argentina to Copa America success, ending their 18-year drought.

His, arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal to Euros triumph in 2016 before clinching the Nations League in 2019.

The two superstars still have the chance to pip the other at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as they look to add a world title to their CVs.

Ronaldo will lead Portugal in what could be his final World Cup appearance as the Selecao face Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea to make it through to the knockout stages. While Messi will face Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico in their quest to make it to their first World Cup final since 2014.
