Meet Farmer Turned Sports Minister… John Enoh
President Bola Tinubu’s latest appointment has set the stage for a notable shift in Nigeria’s sports landscape, as Senator John Owan Enoh takes the reins as the 36th Sports Minister in the country’s history, succeeding the accomplished Sunday Dare.
This transition, however, marks a departure from the conventional, as Senator Enoh steps into the role without prior experience in the sports sector, venturing into uncharted territory.
With a political and farming background, Senator Enoh’s journey to this new post has been characterized by diverse pursuits. Hailing from the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State, he previously served as a senator during the 8th Assembly from 2015 to 2019. His political trajectory took an interesting turn in 2017 when he defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
Beyond the realm of politics, Senator Enoh has cultivated a significant presence in the agricultural sector, carving out his own niche as a farmer and livestock owner. His commitment to sustainable farming practices has borne fruit over the years, with vast arable and livestock farms scattered throughout Cross River State, covering an impressive expanse of approximately 2000 hectares. Enoh’s endeavors extend beyond personal gain, as he initiated a commendable corporate social responsibility scheme aimed at supporting local small-scale farmers. This out-grower scheme not only provides access to land but also empowers these farmers with livestock and a reliable market to sell their produce.
Moreover, Senator Enoh’s philanthropic efforts have touched the lives of those grappling with health challenges. Through his JOE (John Owan Enoh) Foundation, he has extended a helping hand to individuals in Nigeria battling diabetes, underscoring his commitment to making a positive impact on the well-being of his fellow citizens.
As Senator John Owan Enoh embarks on his role as Nigeria’s new Sports Minister, his unique blend of political acumen, farming expertise, and dedication to community welfare add a distinct dimension to his leadership in the realm of sports and beyond.
