Niger Republic in Darkness As Nigeria Disconnects Power Supply
Reports reaching our desk reveal that Nigeria has reportedly disconnected the power supply from her source to the Niger Republic. The action was reportedly taken to sanction Niger Republic as directed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Mohamed Bazoum was the president of Niger Republic until 26 July 2023, when soldiers from his guard deposed and also closed the country’s borders. After the succes of the coup, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, also known as Omar Tchiani, declared himself leader.
The coup led to sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the disconnection of the power supply to the Niger Republic on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 is one of those sanctions.
The report said power outages in Niger have been more frequent than it was in previous times as power only stayed on for about an hour at a period for residents of the cities of Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder.
