Ogun State Police Arrest Father & Son For Killing Herdsman
The Ogun state police command has apprehended a father and his son for the murder of a 32-year-old herdsman known as Abubakar Usman.
The suspects, who live in Gbagba Elewure village, Odeda Local Government Area of the state, reportedly killed Abubakar for allowing his cows to graze around their farmlands.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Oyeyemi said the suspects were arrested by the police for conspiracy and murder of Abubakar last Wednesday.
The PPRO said the elder brother of the deceased, Bello Usman, lodged a complaint at the divisional headquarters in Odeda about the sudden disappearance of Abubakar.
According to the PPRO, the suspects were arrested following a complaint by Bello that the deceased had a cattle settlement at Gbagba Elewure village and had gone missing.
Oyeyemi stated, “Upon the report, a search party was organised for Abubakar. Later in the evening, the corpse was found in an abandoned well in the nearby bush, where he was thrown after he had been killed.
“The DPO, Odeda Division, CSP Ajayi Williams, led detectives to the scene, where the victim was seen with deep machete cuts all over his body.
“Having confirmed that the deceased was murdered in cold blood, the DPO and his men commenced an intelligence-based investigation into the case, which led to the arrest of the father and his son, who also live in the same village with the victim.
“On interrogation, they both confessed to killing the deceased, because they saw him grazing his cows around their farms.
“They stated further that the deceased was warned to take his cattle away from the area and when he refused, he was beaten with a charmed ring, which made him to be unconscious, after which he was butchered to death.
“He was then dragged to an abandoned well about one kilometre from the place and was dumped there.”
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Kenneth Ebrimson, had ordered that the suspects be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
“The CP also warned that those who are in the habit of taking the law into their own hands will not find it easy with the command, because jungle justice has no place in our laws,” Oyeyemi added.
