In the early hours of Saturday, March 11, a radio host from Ibadan known as Baba Bintin fell and passed away while traveling to work.
The deceased, who held a show at Ayefele Music House, Challenge, Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, with the pair Komolafe Olaiya and Olalomi Amole, was reportedly on his way to Fresh FM radio station when he slumped.
According to the Daily Trust, Baba Bintin reportedly had to walk from his home in the Amuloko neighborhood to Challenge since he was unable to find the money to pay for transportation there.
Olalomi Amole and Komolafe Olaiya had ended their Saturday morning program, Oyin Adun, abruptly 20 minutes before time, after they received the call about the medical emergency of Baba Bintin.
Nigerians have been battling with the scarcity of the Naira notes since February. The scarcity came as a result of the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The CBN had redesigned N200, N500 and N1000 and phased the old notes out of circulation, but some governors had approached the Supreme Court to challenge the apex bank’s action. Following the court ruling on old notes, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered that only N200 old notes should remain legal tender.
However, the court on March 3, ruled that old N500 and N1000 notes should remain legal tender till December2023.
The Federal government and the CBN are yet to comply with the order, causing the scarcity of the Naira notes to linger.
