Premier League: Manchester City Loses On Home Soil To Brentford
Ivan Toney scored both goals as Brentford shocked Premier League winners Manchester City 2-1 in retaliation for his World Cup exclusion.
The Bees forward, who was left off Gareth Southgate’s team for Qatar this week, scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time at the Etihad Stadium to hand City a shocking defeat in their penultimate game before the break.
Toney, who was excellent the entire night, gave Brentford the lead after 16 minutes, but Phil Foden tied the score just before halftime.
In the second half, both teams had opportunities, but Toney made the difference late in the extra 10 minutes, breaking City’s streak of 11 consecutive home league victories.
Erling Haaland’s return to the City starting lineup following injury had been the topic of conversation prior to the game, but Toney took center stage.
Few people gave Brentford much of a chance to change that figure at City because they had not won away from home all season.
However, after manager Thomas Frank pledged to challenge the champs, they did so.
