Published

No fewer than 80 houses were destroyed by rainstorm on Saturday night in Ile-Oluji, Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Many electricity poles were broken by the storm that started in the evening all through the night thereby rendering the entire town in total darkness. A large number of the residents are currently homeless due to the havoc wreaked by the storm.

Some of the victims gave account of how the storm began and blown off the roofs. In his account, Chief Ebenezer Akinboladun, the traditional head of the Ke-Jege, revealed that the thunderstorm was scary as it came with whirlwind.

An octogenarian woman was stated that the thunderstorm was unprecedented. Chief Oyewole Elusiyan and Mrs. Grace Moniade, headteacher of St Gabriel’s C&S Primary School, Oke Akada, which was among the structures that were totally brought down, appealed to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to come to their aid. They explained that what would cost them to rebuilt the destroyed structures would be too expensive for them to bear. Mrs Rebecca Odefadehan, another victim, said the effect of the rainstorm was devastating, adding that schools, houses, churches and several electricity poles were destroyed.

The traditional ruler of the town, the Olu Okeigbo, Oba Lawrence Oluwole Babajide, said the incident was catastrophic, saying the affected subjects needed government’s intervention urgently to be able to renovate their destroyed structures. Oba Babajide explained that the cost of building materials had escalated and would be too expensive for his affected subjects to afford.
