Ric Hassani And The Modern Break-Up Song

Published

Break-up songs used to be about lovers wanting their partners back. In fact, they were still regarded as love songs because they carry deep emotions and demonstrate strong affections for the estranged lover.

From our local songs to the foreign ones are examples of heartbreak songs tinged with love and desire like King Sunny Ade’s My Dear and Whitney Houston’s Where do broken Hearts Go? The list is endless from generation to generation.

However, 2004 and Eamon smashed the sentimental tone of the heartbreak song with I don’t want you back- a smash hit about a love story gone wrong. It was youthful, immature and funny in a way that the youths of that period turned it into an anthem.

It made a Jezebel of every girl and that self-righteous tone of the male as the faithful lover rented the airwaves. Though a response came through a female voice with the same title but different lyrics dumping the refuse on the males; it never hit the heights of the first one.

Just when we thought that would be the last time we would have a heartbreak song so bilious that didn’t want the lover back but rather cast them into the deepest parts of hell; Ric Hassani steps in with Thunder Fire You.

Lovely song, simple yet detailed video matched with a syrupy voice and handsome face. Can we say the modern break-up song for this generation that lives on the fast lane is here? It is the 21st century of remote jobs, technology, smart phones and apps, bubbly youths who want the good side of everything without making much sacrifices- they have redefined loyalty in what works and not what will work because they are impatient.

It is not to say infidelity started with them rather it is to point out how they might handle such cases. That is, throw curses at each other; burn pictures and at the speed of tech, move on without a rethink.
