RONALDO REACTS AS PORTUGAL PROGRESS
Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has taken to social media following Portugal’s 3-1 victory over Turkey on Thursday evening.
Goals from Otavio, Diogo Jota and Matheus Luiz Nunes ensured the Selecao’s progression to the World Cup qualification play-off finals.
Our no.7 played the full 90 minutes in Porto and did have the ball in the net with the score still at 1-0, however the 37-year-old was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.
Portugal will now face North Macedonia – who shocked Italy – for a place at the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year, with the game set to take place on Tuesday 29 March at the Estadio do Dragao once more.
The United player took to social media shortly after the victory, congratulating his team mates on their success but insisting ‘nothing is achieved’ just yet.
“We have to continue to work in a serious and focused way, respecting the opponent but always believing in our abilities,” wrote CR7. “Come on Portugal! Heading to Qatar.”
Ronaldo mustered eight goals in World Cup qualifying, with Portugal having to battle for their place at the finals due to Serbia’s last-gasp winner in their final Group A fixture back in November.
Reds midfielder and fellow Portugese star Bruno Fernandes also took to Instagram to congratulate his teammates, hailing an ‘important victory’ for his nation.
“Fantastic team attitude and great atmosphere in the stadium,” said Bruno.
“We’re closer, but nothing is guaranteed yet… let’s go with everything on Tuesday!”
Our no.18 played 80 minutes during the tie before being replaced by William Carvalho, with Diogo Dalot completing a full 90 minutes for his country.
Dalot won only his fifth cap for his country and will hope to feature once more in the crucial clash in Porto next week.
