His close friend, Joshua Steen, saw the stream and attempted to stop it when McNutt accidentally fired the rifle. Steen wanted to seek help from the police, but Facebook allowed the stream to continue, citing that it didn’t violate their rules.
During the live stream, McNutt’s phone received several calls, including one from his ex-girlfriend, leading to an argument. After the call, McNutt spoke to the viewers, said his final words, and then tragically took his own life by shooting himself below the chin.
Some viewers recorded the stream, and the New Albany Police Department received a notification but entered McNutt’s residence only after hearing the fatal gunshot. His phone continued ringing even after his passing, and the police couldn’t contact him through the speakerphone.
