UNILAG Reverses School Fee Hike After Meeting with Student Union

Published

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has made a significant reversal on its decision to increase school fees, following a meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The university has decided to grant micro fee cuts in response to the demands of students.

In July, UNILAG had announced an impending increase in its fees, set to take effect from September 1. However, in light of recent developments, the institution has opted to reduce these fees. Here are the key adjustments:

Obligatory Fees:

  • Utility charges for all students have been reduced from ₦20,000 to ₦15,000.
  • The obligatory fees for new undergraduate students have been revised from ₦126,325 to ₦116,325 for courses without Lab/Studio and ₦176,325 to ₦166,325 for Courses with Lab/Studio.
  • Returning undergraduate students will now pay ₦80,750 for courses without Lab/Studio (previously ₦100,750), ₦120,250 for courses with Lab/Studio (previously ₦140,250), and ₦170,250 for medical/pharmacy students and students in health professions (previously ₦190,250).
  • The convocation fee for final-year students has been reduced to ₦27,000 from ₦30,000.

Hostel Fees:

  • Undergraduate hostel fees in Akoka and Yaba campuses have been reduced to ₦43,000 from ₦90,000.
  • Hostel fees in the Idi-Araba campus have been lowered to ₦65,000 from ₦120,000.
  • Sodeinde Hall fees have been decreased to ₦135,000 from ₦250,000.

Additionally, as a result of the meeting with university management, it has been decided to reinstate UNILAG’s student union government, which had been dissolved in 2016. This move signifies a positive step towards addressing the concerns and demands of the student body.
