Update: Court Remands Seun Kuti For Additional Four Days

Seun Kuti, the troubled singer, has had his remand extended by four more days by the Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The police requested an extension of the remand order till May 22 when they spoke with Chief Magistrate Mrs. Adeola Olatubosun.

The police legal team was lead by Mr. Simon Lough (SAN), who on Thursday made the application in court.

He claimed that the additional time is required to carry out a more thorough examination into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on the police officer.

Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, is currently on trial for the alleged assault of a police officer in Lagos.

A video capturing him slapping and pushing a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge went viral on Saturday, May 13.

The police charged him with assaulting an inspector after driving recklessly on the bridge and intentionally obstructing a moving police vehicle.

He was first arraigned on Tuesday, May 16, during which the police obtained an order to detain him for 48 hours.

However, the magistrate ruled that he should be granted bail in the sum of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand, with one of the sureties being a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case had been adjourned until May 22 for mention.
